They get clogged over time. It is incorrect for that exhaust guy to say they will go bad from less back pressure or any other ridiculous statement like that. They simply get clogged up over time from the exhaust gasses (the inside of a catalytic converter is a honeycomb like material). Usually a catalytic converter will last a minimum of 100,000 to 200,000 miles.

In all reality, a modern oem catalytic converter and an aftermarket "high flow" catalytic converter are basically the exact same thing. Years ago oem catalytic converters were more restrictive, so switching to an aftermarket high flow one gave performance improvements, but anymore there is not really any gain at all. They even look the same now (round instead of oval).

I'm not really worried about the cats going bad. If they do I'll put aftermarket on. It definetly runs better with the exhaust upgraded. You can feel the power. And it sounds like it has 400 HP.

They guys that did mine said that going with TD's would put the truck into limp mode. I almost walked out then, and they asked about my cats..told them I'd already gutted them. He asked it the CEL is on, I was like yea b/c the rear sensor is reading the same as the front. He was all like that'll mess up the engine, I had to explain to him in simple terms that the rear o2 sensor was there to just let the pcm know that the cats are doing their job. Once he figured out I knew what I was talking about he told me to pull the truck up on the rack.

Great informative thread!

All this talk about Y pipes and next to no part numbers...???

So, what's the Magnaflow part number for their Y pipe?
