Default Sub box and sub questions

I checked out a few local audio shops around me and one said they would take my truck and custom mold the box to my rear storage space for maximum airspace. They have done many rams in my area. They charge $250 but with the foxbox going up to $225 I think I will have them make mine. Now what kind of 10" subs and amp would I need? I will have a very nice box, so could you guys recommend some subs and an amp for me along with how much each cost? Another question, would a aftermarket stereo be necessary with subs? Thanks

You likely will need an aftermarket stereo for the RCA pre-outs which delivers the sound to your amp. I have not come across any factory stereo's that have this. Your local car stereo shop would be able to tell you for sure. As far as speakers and amps I have always been a fan of Rockford Fosgate or JL audio.

you dont need a new headunit you can use a mtx re-q, jl cleansweep or something simliar. I ordered a mtx re-q yesterday because i dont want to switch out my headunit. after all my research i would stay away for those bargin line output converters

as far as subs go its best to listen to them locally if you can everyones taste will differ. i think jl and rf, kicker all overpriced for what you get and i dont like the sound of them either but thats my opinion on them and shouldnt be yours.

What is your goal for this system? daily driver with some added bump?

if you want to branch out of the rf, jl, kicker group check out these companies

audioque
fi audio
sound solutions audio
re audio / us amps
dc audio
incrimantor audio
tc sounds

most of the time these lesser known brands have better build quality and better spl/sq than mainstream brands

thatreddodge, any particular reason you want to keep your stock head? to save money? do you plan on upgrading your door speakers (w/ or w/o an amp on them)?

if you're just looking to add some bass and keep the cost down by not upgrading the other equipment, thats obviously up to you. if that floats your boat, then go for it and enjoy. but IMO with going to the expense of having a custom box made, buying good amp and subs, i would certainly upgrade all the other equipment too. running (2) quality 10's will drowned out your stock head unit/speaker setup. the Cleansweep and MTX unit are great for some of the fancier vehicle like luxury cars that really need to keep the factory radio due the electronic setups now a days. but they cost as much as a good sounding head unit from Pioneer, Kenwood, etc...

as far as going to a showroom and listening to subs again IMO, isn't realistic they will not sound the same as they will in a truck due to the acoustic difference in a store and a truck. it just won't, no way around it. you'll need to work with the guys that are building your box and let them recommend subs that have the specs to fit your needs ie; cu ft, wattage, budget.... in addition, you'll need to do research on your own by reading these and other forums to see what people are using and that work well in their trucks too.

RE, JL and mid-upper Rockford subs are all great. just finding what fits your needs is the key.

good luck!

Sorry guys, been busy most the day. Thanks for the replies. I would keep the stock headunit to save money. I see what you are saying about having nice subs but stock speakers...how many speakers do we have in our trucks? And which ones would be worth replacing? My truck would be just a daily driver, but I listen to music 99% of the time.
