Default Driveshaft came off truck..

Soo..Back again with another issue, it seems. My truck is a Dodge Ram 2005 QC 4x4 with a hemi..has 70,000 miles on it.

I searched thru the threads for driveshaft issues but didn't find the exact same problem as mine.

Three days ago..coming home..I noticed a weird grinding noise..kind of like something was rubbing against a tire. I couldn't figure out what it was. The truck sat overnight..and the next day I went to drive up the road.

The noise became louder..almost sounded like an airplane was taking off the rear end of my truck..was real bad. So I pulled over and tried to move the truck to a safer area..well I heard a giant thump like a 100 lb block of steel fell from under my truck and the back tires started skidding and not moving..whole truck shaking..

I got out and the drive shaft had come off of the rear end and was dragging but still attached to the front end. According to my step dad, the fact that the back wheels locked up could be an awful sign.

Does anyone know if I will need a whole new power train or what could have caused this?

Thanks.

This does not sound good. At the very least, I am guessing your looking at a new rear end and possibly rear drive shaft. What could have caused this? The list is long, but the first item is the lubricant level in the rear end. I am sure that which ever shop you take it too will fill you in on what they find.

Sorry to say, but his will likely be a costly repair.

Yeah..I'm not happy. I'm hoping it's only a u-joint or something similar to that but at this rate, my step father says the whole rear end may need replaced.

The rear end locked up? That's not a good sign...even without the driveshaft removed the differential gears should keep moving freely.

That's what I thought too Maddog, you think the transmission and everthing else will be okay? Or just rear end needs to be replaced. I should probably call my mechanic to see what they figured out. They may need to ship it out to a dodge dealership.

I never did update this. The whole pumpkin and rear end needed replaced in my truck because it locked up and basically ate all the bearings. The warranty company, of course, tried to say it was my fault, and I didn't grease the drive shaft and that I was off-roading. I haven't been off-roading in my truck. And the drive shaft clearly doesn't need greased by me. Soo..they ended up paying for a 2,000 dollar repair. One thing after another with my truck.

Holy moly, I guess i should go get my Rear Diff serviced... I put over 900 miles each week.. If this happened on the road, I would be royally screwed..

Luckily for you, Warranty covered it..

i only have 41,000 miles on my 2009 Ram & i drive like a grandpa
i just had my u joints replaced on the driveshaft, they were already sloppy & making clunking noises going into reverse
the dealer said that everything was fine now, but, i expect it was a combination of things, maybe the tranny or rear end will be next
time will tell
