it's a catch 22... the best air for our motors will always be the coldest air...a closed box has an advantage that it isn't exposed to the heat the motor produces under the hood...usually there is a snorkel that is run close to the fender and far away from motor where the coolest air get's sucked in...now the advantage that a Volant has for example it that it has a cone type filter that accepts air 360 degrees while in the box...the disadvantage is that imo, the snorkel is not letting enough air in...but it's still better then the stock setup. As for the more open intakes like the Bfi, the advantage is the volume of air that can be pulled in is not matched by any other intake (unless it's boosted), the argument here though is that a lot of the air is heated from the motor. So take your pick, pros an cons...i chose the bfi and my truck is hella quick...

yup, I got mine literally from the first batch (before it was called BFI..it was called the Ramhammer) so i got lucky and got mine within a few weeks of order... the only way you'll find it now is if someone sells or wrecks their truck, and it sells quick once posted so you have to constantly watch all the classifieds of all the dodge forums for them...

Looking at getting a Volant CAI for my 2001 Ram 1500 5.9. Is the Ram Air Scoop worth adding on as well, or should I plug the open hole?

Rootbeer, what is you opinion on the AFE Stage 2 CAI? (v the Stage 1)

They're both open CAI's which I don't like in any manner. But with that said, the Stage 2 has a massive filter, uses the bottom half of the stock box and comes in a dry version which is a good thing.

Also, the Stage 1 is not made for the 09 and up Rams. Here's a link.

You're right, so I'll junk that! I definlity would want the most real cold air as possible, and based on your evals the Airraid is the way to go. I think that this is the way to go then, unless you know of another brand that can get more cold air in!
