This is true... Took me some reading to figure it out.

"Fuel Saver Mode
The FUEL SAVER MODE message will display above the
average fuel economy in the EVIC display. This message
will appear whenever MDS (if equipped) allows the
engine to operate on four cylinders, or if you are driving
in a fuel efficient manner.
This feature allows you to monitor when you are driving
in a fuel efficient manner, and it can be used to modify
driving habits in order to increase fuel economy."

AS OPPOSED TO:

"ECO / ECO-ON (Fuel Saver Indicator) — If Equipped
The ECO-ON indicator will illuminate when you are
driving in a fuel efficient manner and can be used to
modify driving habits in order to increase fuel economy.
The ECO display will toggle between ECO and ECO-ON depending on driving habits and vehicle usage. Press the
Odometer / Trip Odometer / ECO (Fuel Saver Indicator)
button to change the display from odometer to either of
the two trip odometer settings or the “ECO” display."

Sound? Feel? There is no tell tell sign that you've gone from 8 to 4. Only way you really know is when you're not pulling into a gas station...LOL. Just like the ESP control system, you never know it happend. Now the 2010's,on the higher end do indicate that you are in MDS mode.

i can tell when mine kicks in mostly if i'm on flat land & holding a steady throttle, then the truck comes to a small hill, not enough to cause it to shift, but just enough to kick out of the MDS mode & then when i get to the top of that rise & it kicks back into MDS

after you drive it a while, you will be able to tell when it engages & disengages by more of a certain feel or sense, not necessarily any noise or anything that you can exactly put your finger on
