Default '06 Right rear turn signal not working

Hi - new member. Trying to help my sister-in-law get her 06 pass inspection.

Right rear turn signal isn't working and right flasher is making the circuit cycle faster than normal. Since that often happens when a bulb is out, I replaced the right rear bulb. No change. Next, I swapped the new bulb turn signal bulb with the brake light bulb (brake lights are working & bulb had same part number on it). Same symptom, brake light works but turn signal still doesn't -- so bulbs are good.

Next, I tested for voltage at the plug for the right rear tail light housing. Interestingly 2 of the pins are showing about 10.5-11.5V with nothing on. (Vehicle has fully charged battery)

I didn't know which pins go to which lights, so I plugged in a trailer plug that I have that has little red indicator lights to show when the turn signals or brake lights are on. The two turn signal indicators (the ones furthest from the ground pin & that correspond with yellow & green wires on a trailer plug) were on but dim. With the brakes on, those two indicators go bright but the brake light indicator doesn't light (even though the brake lights on the truck work).

It seems like something is shorted but the wiring from the tail light housing as far forward up to the engine bay as I could trace it looks good - clean, in the factory wrapping, etc. The truck is in good condition, has never been in a wreck.

Any ideas for how those symptoms would make sense & where to start looking?

Thanks

definitely sounds like you have a short somewhere. Did you look at the plug real good to make sure that there isn't any corrosion between contacts or that it isn't melted? Also, sometimes if there is a ground missing, the circuit will ground through something else. I have seen some crazy things happen with missing grounds. Like reverse lights come on with turn signals and all kinds of things

Should the 2006 Ram 4x4 with 5.7L have daytime running lights? If so, that may be what's shorted or had a ground come loose because those aren't on (if they're supposed to be).

Anyone know if the 06 Ram 4x4 w/5.7L should have daytime running lights? My sister in law go the truck from her uncle. He's not around & she doesn't know. I'm thinking it probably is supposed to have them & they're shorted with the turn signal. Anyone know?

No it should not have daylight running lights that automatically turn on.

Did you get a lamp out indicator on the dash?

If so, put in the new bulb and try this.

Disconnect your battery to reset the PCM. Wait. Then reconnect your battery.

Check to see if the bulb works and the dash lights is out.

The truck is PCM controlled. When the PCM senses a resistance drop due to a broken light bulb, it automatically reduces the voltage and sets off the lamp out indicator.

Let me know how you make out.

Found the problem... Behind the tail light assembly is a grey plastic part that holds the bulb sockets. The harness plugs into that piece and it screws into the back of the tail light assembly. The short was inside that part. Surprisingly my local AutoZone had the part in stock and it was only about $15.

Signal is now working and she can get the truck inspected!
