Default Difference in gear ratios?

OK, let's just say for the sake of argument, I don't know anything about gear/axle ratios. What is the difference between the OEM ratios available on these trucks. Be as specific as possible. Remember, we are...uh...pretending I don't know anything on this subject.

Oh, let's include the 1500, 2500, and 3500.

The simplest way I can explain it, the lower the gear ratio, say the 3.21, the better the gas mileage. The higher the gear ratio, say 4.10, the higher the torque. How in depth you you want me to explain it to you... ahem... the other forum members?

It works the same way as it does on a 10 speed bike, but think of it as the cog on the wheel. Lower numbers are bigger cogs, so the higher the number, the smaller the cog. The smaller the cog, the easier it is for you, on a bike, or engine in a car to spin the tire.

The problem with making using a high gear set is that you have to peddle more (more rpms on an engine)... The peddling might be easier, but you burn more calories....

It's that simple..

OK. What situations would the different ratios be best for?

hill climbs, towing, faster take off etc for the low gear (numerically higher)

freeway driving for high gears (numerically lower)

the 1500's come with either the 3.21, 3.55 or 3.92. i think the r/t comes with 4.10

i have the 3.55 with 8 speed, its a good gear, happy medium. however i think about switching to 4.10's almost daily. LOL but i dont think i ever will...i just might tho. lol

So is switching the gears a major deal or is it a in and out kind of thing...?
