Default ????? magnaflow Y pipe question ?????

So since ive been part of the forum ive seen a lot of post about installing a y pipe. However ive never really read into it in a way ive kinda just overlooked it. The first mod i ever did on my truck was cut my muffler out and had a Y pipe made and put in place of it. Im starting to think thats not the same thing. So this Y pipe you all speak of where does it go? Before the cat? And also with the stock exhaust set up on my truck what inlet/outlet dia. would i need?

Never mind i crawled under my truck and saw exactly where it is restricting flow. called up a few local shops around town and found a guy that will do it for 30 dollars. walking out the door soon as im done writing this msg lol.

Haha well you answered your own question so there's not much to say here. But yes, the OEM Y-pipe is ridiculously restrictive. You'll free up a ton of flow by swapping it out with an aftermarket one.

The Y-pipe is after the cats and before the muffler.
The pipes coming from the exhaust manifolds are 2.5 inch through the cats and then into the factory Y-pipe which merges them into a single 3 inch pipe into the muffler.
The problem is the factory Y-pipe is a bad design and is very restrictive. The theory is the magnaflow or some other aftermarket y-pipe will open up this area and flow better than stock...

Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, or whatever you want to call the company, invested a great deal of R&D designing this exhaust system to maximized efficiency and performance... I doubt that the OEM Y pipe was an oversight, but more to facilitate a certain amount of back pressure to enhance torque numbers. That being said, I've always been a fan of replacing OEM exhausts, which was the first mod that I installed on my '14 (MagnaFlow Cat-backs). The new exhaust was added to improve sound with no expectation of maximizing performance. If replacing the Y pipe enhances sound, then I'll listen (pun intended), otherwise I'll personally wait to see comparable dyno numbers before I'm sold on any performance gains...

Edit: unfortunately the new Y pipe is not I simple bolt-on like the rest of MagnaFlow system. I believe that most had to have the piece welded in...

well i didnt get it done... i get there and the guy was like "doing a y pipe right there would be stupid. id only do this if you let me do a true dual exhaust." i told him that id loose a bunch of back pressure thus low end torque. he then asked where i heard that and i told him the internet and he said that hes been doing exhaust for 25 years and that every one is full of sh!t and that the only way to do it would be true dual pipes. i didnt like the guy or what he had to say. he then said if i wanted to see some real power i needed to put a flowmaster muffler on my truck ( i have a muffler delete).... i think the guy was teetering on stupid to be honest. his sales tactics might work on the old guys with chevells and novas but its not gonna work on me... needless to say i didnt get it done. oh and he wanted to charge me 300 if i really wanted a y pipe made because apparently he would have to remove my transmission... and apparently thats the only way to do it... LOL!

I had trouble following that story brandondolon. As soon as you said he mentioned the transmission I thought the same thing Stang said.

Restrictive flow, is restrictive flow however you want to sugar-coat it.

I don't.
