I always ask for my spare to be checked! I'll skip most of the story but picture this...

Driving from Cheyenne to, then home, Oregon, my best friend, Marcia, and I off the side of I-80 Westbound in the middle of the Utah Salt Flats.. aka No Man's Land (not far form Bonneville, actually) due to a blown tire on my, then, 1983 Ford Escort POS.

I set out to change the tire while Marcia bounces her butt on the spare (she always tries to make me smile in moments of stress, god love her). I roll me eyes and then she squeals.. turns out my spare doesn't have much air in it and the rim pinched her a$$. Funny, but a whole new problem.

A truck pulls over with father and son who end up helping us by filling the tire enough to limp my Escort into Wendover, NV (they followed us there and I bought them dinner - nice guys ).

So, yes, the spare tire is always on my pre-flight check list prior to long drives now. LOL

Been there done that, got the t-shirt (the one that says "Good Move, Genius".

One of the first things that I always do is put my 4 way lug wrench into a new vehicle that I purchase.

If I may add, it's also a good idea to learn how to operate the spare tire winch. If you can't work it, it's pretty much useless, and you're in the same boat...

The spare is from 2004...but in good shape luckily. I've got my lug wrench is in the truck now but then it was in my toolbox on the moving truck. I was a wreck trying to make sure I had everything packed since it was 5 days before the moving truck got to our new house. I even packed the TV without the power cord...

The wife and kids were not real happy...

I check my tires every month, before any road trips, and after any dramatic weather fluctuations. The spare is no exception.

Speaking of problems with changing tires......

A few months back when I bought my new travel trailer and was bringing it home, I got a flat tire and had to change it.

Well stupid me didn't think to bring the "extras" that you may need when buying something like this, but at the very least there was a spare tire and I had my brand spanking new jack in my brand spanking new RAM 1500.......

So I must admit that I spent a few minutes looking around for the jack, before I decided to do the unmanly thing and read the instructions as to where it was and how to get it out of it's hiding spot.

Well the obscenities that game out of my mouth whilst trying to get that fricken thing off of it's "threaded" rod, came fast and furious.

There was so many of them and at rate of speed only equal to that of explosive diarrhoea, would have any onlookers convinced that I had the worst case of turret syndrome going.

I was clearly tired from what was a long 12 hour journey with very little sleep from the night before, and my temper got the best of me, but how in gods name do you get that damn thing off when the strip the threads putting the wing nut on??

I honestly spent an hour trying to get it off, and actually couldn't do it.

Luckily for me I had called my brother for help before I burnt the truck and trailer to the ground.

He shows up in his brand spanking new RAM 1500, and with a flick of a wrist has his fricken wing nut off of the jack in less than 30 seconds!

Of course I continued my vulgar tirade until the tire was replaced, but was taught a valuable lesson.

Check and make sure that your emergency stuff actually works before your blood pressure goes off the charts, and you yourself don't end up in emergency! LOL.....

Wow.. it isn't fair if you don't even have one to begin with, let alone leaving home without one.

Go and get what's yours! Glad we could all help you out!

Oh I could only imagine the mood I would have been in if there wasn't a jack there!! LOL.....

And I agree, this forum and the people that are here are great!

I learn new things quite often, even if I hadn't planed on it!
