Default Switching from 20" to 17"

I swear I have been searching the forums and google for answers, but if they are there and I missed them...my apologies and feel free to bash away lol! I have a 2012 Ram 1500 4x4 Crew that has the stock 20x9 wheels on it. I'd like to get a 17" wheel package and keep my 20s in the garage when I get the urge to put em on. I want more tire, less rim. I can't find any definitive answers on my questions though. What offset and backspacing would I need to keep it pretty close to stock? I definitely do not want to stick out anymore than it is now. I found a set of wheels I really like...here are the specs: 17x8, 00mm offset, 4.45" backspacing. Also, what is the biggest 17R tire that I can squeeze in there? I'm stock, no lift, no level. Any help is greatly appreciated since I have been chasing my tail on this lol!

I went with Michelin 275/65R20 LtX These tires gave me 1.5" more on the side wall then the OEM HP's I really like them.

Since you are planning on dropping to 17”s and want to keep a stock look, try and find a rim as close to the stock setup which has a +19 offset and is 9 inches wide. If you want a slightly larger tire than stock without a lift or level you might need to push your rims out a little bit (like a +12 offset rim) to avoid any rubbing, but you should be ok with a stock offset and 285/70/17.

Below I attached my favorite tire size calculator that gives you actual sizes and a visual representation, this way we can give you suggestions and opinions and you can check for yourself and make your own judgment call.

Best of luck!

Thanks! Very helpful! So I've found some 17s that are very close to stock with the offset, but I really wanted to try and squeeze a 34" tire on there since I've read that's the most that stock will accommodate, but I can't find much for a 17" wheel! I also read that 285 is the widest that can go in there without spacers, but if I get a 17x8 rim does that give me a little more wiggle room to go wider? I really wanted to do a level kit, but I've heard differing views on them and was trying to avoid it for now even for warranty purposes. Honestly, I love the look of tires that stick out past the fenders, BUT I'm worried about all the crap it's going to kick up since I don't have mud flaps.

The only way to go to a wider tire, is to go w a lower offset wheel. And/or a level or a lift kit. A narrower rim will make the tire sit slightly taller and narrower but not a lot. You're better off going w a 17x8.5 w a zero offset and a 285/65 11.2" wide x 7.3" of sidewall and will sit 24mm further out than your stockers) or 295/60 (11.6" wide x 7" of sidewall and will sit 29mm further out than your stockers).

Your stock tire is 10.8" wide x 6.5" of sidewall.

But putting Bilstein adjustable front struts at 2.1" setting on the front Would finish off the look nicely. Literally thousands of people are happily running them.

The rims that I really want also come in an 18x9 with a 18mm offset. I was also considering that to get me closer to stock offset. I really wanted to go 17s, but I really like these rims haha. If I go with the 17 it has the 0 offset and I'm just worried about how much they are going to stick out of the fenders. I like the look, but with no mud flaps or flares I don't want to be slinging up road debris and gravel and all that crap up on the body.

Go with 18s with the + 18 offset. You won't be disappointed. (Says the guy with that exact setup)

If you put 275/70R18s on them, you will be nearly identical to stock. Speed will be right and it will look good

Have any pics? Do you feel like you could have squeezed any more tire in there though haha? I plan on going with a much more aggressive tread so I'm hoping that will kind of fill in the wheel well anyway.

You could easily fit bigger tires. This is my winter setup, so fatter tires is counter productive.

Tires are Goodyear DuraTracs.
