DSFO. interesting. never thought of that method to increase gas mileage, but it certainly is a duh now that you mention it. Thanks for the info.

That must be the reason I've seen my RPM drop below 500 when I coast sometimes. Good info!

Because of this, the engine has to work against the restricted air flow thus causing the brake effect. It does it on the Hemi with the 545/65RFE as well, as I like to use it while coasting downhill. Technology I tell ya, it's too Kewl.
Thank you for your didactic explanation. Only problem is that it is not applicable to what is being discussed or described.

Please understand, it is not that I do not need a lecture on inherent internal engine friction and fluid/gas dynamics of the V8 air pump that resides under my hood but it is more about the transmission dynamics and operation. This thread is actually concerned with a peculiarity in the downshifting of the 8 speed Torque Flite transmission. I have never encountered such a drag before with any internal combustion engine I have owned that was powering an automatic. Mind you, all my previous engines have plenty of internal air flow, reciprocating varying air pressure and internal friction developed by the reciprocating and rotating parts of the engine. I am speculating that with this high tech electronic tranny, perhaps the trans is locked up for efficiency and this tranny does not use as many open clutches as other conventional transmissions. Thus, as the trans downshifts, forces from the slowing engine (foot off gas pedal) are transmitted through the remaining closed clutches which creates that 'drag' feeling. I am eager to learn more about automatic trans operation.

I have defective weather stripping on my truck to be replaced and it is going in for repair at the dealer next week. I will address this transmission drag issue with the supervisor at the dealership. I will post any helpful information I obtain.

Wow, my head is reciprocating. I mean spinning....

Not sure how it's a gas saving technology if you have to hit the gas again to avoid stopping sooner than planned. Or maybe this is just another part of the tree-huggers' evil plans to rid the world of SUVs and pickups? Making us drive a hemi slower than we want is almost as bad as forcing O-care down our throats.

My dad had the same issue with his 2012 6 speed caravan. Had two different tranny flashes now it finally coasts. Same as the 2012 journey v6 I test drove. My 2013 v6 ram does the same crap. Really annoying and clunky driving around in the city. Glad i live in the country or the dealer would be flashing new software to my tranny already. Its the way Chrysler is programing all their vehicles.

Very well said Skytop and no pun intended with my off topic, and methodical explanation that had very little to do with your ZF 8. Very interesting this tranny is and I look forward to reading on your findings when you return from your service department visit.

6 weeks with my truck and the 8 speed frequently gets on my nerves. In my local area, if I accelerate to 30 mph, the moment I take my foot off the gas, the truck immediately downshifts and noticeably slows the truck. Feels like going into 2nd gear if it were a manual. At about 12 mph, the effect disappates and the truck finally coasts. I think it has much to do with the multiple clutches in this trans and the economy algorithms the firmware follows. At any rate, it is annoying.
