Default Picking up my 1500 Longhorn...towing

Okay I am driving to pick up my new 2013 1500 Longhorn Hemi with 8 speed transmission and 3.21 gear on Saturday. I would have preferred the 3.55 but it will be a daily driver so probably makes more sense to have the 3.21. I would like to tow 7000lbs or less about 3 times a year on average and was wondering if I am going to have problems????????

That depends on how much less than 7000lbs you want to tow, and also whether you have 4x4 or rambox. A Longhorn 4x4 with 3.21 and rambox has a max trailer weight of 6100lbs. On the other hand a longhorn 4x2 without rambox and with 3.21 is rated at 6450lbs.

Will it actually have problems with a 7k trailer? I don't think so, but you may still be exceeding your tow rating.

According to the PDF chart that Ram has online your tow rating is 6200lbs.

It is hard for me to understand how the tow amount can go down so much between the 3.55 and 3.21 but I am not a gear head so I guess that is correct???

A taller gear, not only hurts your performance, but it stresses your driveline components out more..

Think about peddling a 10 speed bike. It's really noticable when peddling up an incline... Think of how much harder you have to push the peddle, to maintain or increase speed. It's the same in a vehicle.

This subject comes up often, OP, do a little searching and you will find a lot of information. In short you will find your truck makes an excellent tug. I have the eight speed with 3.21s and pull 7,600 pounds around with greater ease that my Tahoe. The tow ratings are based on market and not actual, if the auto-makers ever adopt SAE towing standards then the number become more important.

The eight speed with 3.21s has more off the line grunt that the six speed with 3.92s and folks have been towing with the later for years with out issue. The transmission shift logic is well done and will not hunt for gears. Your towing experience has a lot to do with the type of driving you will be doing, freeway versus city, for example.

That's not bad....with 800 pounds for example of passenger weight in the truck, that's only 1700 pounds over your payload limit......., plus pulling over your tow limit.

Frankly, I don't don't try to tell anyone their business, the thing is, that much over your payload allowance isn't a small margin, if you pop an air bag or have a leak for that matter on one or both airlines you would probably be sitting on the bump stops, I would think that would throw a wrench into your holiday, just saying. No dis-respect intended.
