Default Towing with my Ram

I wanted to share an experience I had on a recent camping trip. I have a 2012 Ram 1500 Express with the 5.7 liter Hemi. I towed a travel trailer that weighs approximately 5K, 580lbs tongue and about 400lbs in the bed. I drove a route from Mesa AZ up to Payson AZ that is notorious for killin transmissions on trucks with heavy loads. As a matter of fact I bought the Ram after a bad experience on the same route that almost took out my Silverado with a smaller engine. The hills are not the steepest but they are very long and take their toll. I flew up each hill in my Ram doing around 65 (posted speed limit) average with the AC blaring in 100+ degree weather. I have a BD tuner that monitors my vehicle parameters and my transmission and coolant temps only rose above normal temp about 15-20 degrees. I took a lot of crap from the experts about purchasing a 1500 and not a 2500 but I only am able to get my trailer out about 3 times a year so it suits my needs. Hats off to Dodge for building the most Badass truck I have ever owned!

I know that hill well. I used to pull a 32' travel trailer up it with a Jeep Grand Wagoneer Like you I didn't do it often.

I love my Ram for towing my boat. I like to pass people going up the last hill before Lake Pleasant while towing my boat. Get's lots of looks!

I just traveled the same route this past weekend for the second time with my new Sport/Hemi 5.7, towing in my case 3K with maybe the same payload (passengers and gear). It is a beast of a climb for sure, but there is no question, the Ram is up to the task. Good to hear of your good experience.

I might be doing something similar as well - Glad to hear a positive experience.

My Dad drove his 944 Turbo Porsche from Ft Worth Texas to Columbia South Carolina this week at the same time my wife and I drove the RAM from Ft Worth to Atlanta GA then over here today to South Carolina.

Found out his car is having troubles and there's a chance that I'll be getting a trailer for the car to tow it from Ridgeway, South Carolina to Fort Worth Texas. That'll be a super awesome fun trip.

Hopefully the damn car gets fixed and can drive! Normally a 16 hour trip might end up being 22+

Be sure to check your camper tires air pressure & check the maximum speed of the tires. Some trailer tires are only rated for 60 mph.

I checked the pressure and torque to and from the site but I did not know that they have different speed ratings! The guys at Discount told me that trailer tires are not rated for above 80 mph and 70 is way too fast for me but I will check. Thank you for the advice......
