There down inside the actual rotary assembly itself and are almost impossible to even see let alone get to so you can change them out. I attempted to change the color of the stem leading up to the lens by using a red marker but since there is a slight tint of blue in the led it makes what color? Yea freakin purple! I guess for now it doesn't bother me as it is something different just wanted to pass that along to anyone else attempting it. Also, unless someone else has been able to figure it out I don't believe the fan speed control knob even comes apart. I actually ended up desoldering the whole knob controller from the board and pulling it off to get to the led underneath. The problem there was that those board traces are much weaker than the ones on the doors I think because I had three that came off. I think that's why I lost my lights on that knob. I was going to attempt to go back in and fix it but Im gonna leave it for now because luckily I still have full functionality of my hvac controls and don't really want to screw that up. Im wondering what all would be involved to switch my controller out with one of the dual climate ones that Scotty85 has. At any rate I love the mod and would do it all over again!
I was actually able to change all of the LEDs in the knobs without removing the entire assembly. I used some really small tweezers and a fine-tip soldering iron. It was not easy though! I changed them out to blue so I am in the same boat as you with the purple AC control...I was debating changing that LED to red or back to the green LED and then putting a dividing inside the knob. This would give better contrast between the blue and red...but that's probably more work then it's worth. For now, it's the green on the radio that's really driving me nuts! C'mon Pioneer/Alpine/Somebody - release a radio with CarPlay already!

So I'm now considering doing this. Does anyone have pics of red in their 3rd gen? 02-05 interior? I'd love to do red but don't want it to turn out purple what's the best way to avoid this or is red just not really an option?
If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it I want to start this as soon as I can but I'm really keen on doing red if it will actually BE red not purple.
Thanks.

If you want to change the color of your radio, go to my post. http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=155446

It was pretty easy. Just be careful when taking the screen off.

just FYI the only reason my ac knobs are purple is because I did not change those leds and factory they are a slight shade of blue in the white so when I put red marker over the light diffuser blue+red=.....u bet. PURPLE! lol in retrospect I probably should have know better but o well it doesn't bother me that much and its still pretty sweet to have everything else on the dash, doors, center console and steering wheel red.
