The vehicle was an '06 Durango. Fortunately for the owner, there was no valve to piston contact and the engine was repaired with a new chain, tensioner and oil pump. Had that been my vehicle, the rods would be hanging out the side of the block!

Thats interesting, was it an MDS engine? All the ones I've read about are the 09 and 10 cars, the VVT cars.

Looks like I need to amend my last post. Now the tech that fixed it is telling me it was an '09 with the VVT and MDS.

Thanks for all the info RamTech. I started out reading what was on the Challenger forum and popped over here and found your thread. I sure hope Chrysler steps up and takes care of us. I really like my truck (and Challenger) and don't want either of them to end up with new engines if they don't have to. I'm hoping my Challenger is safe since it's a 6spd without MDS....

that noise sounds exactly like what mine is doing...hmm... sounds like a card in a bicycle wheel from 40mph coasting down to roughly 15 or so. My truck is running fine though and it has always made this noise. Thought it was the torque converter, but its had 3 of them and the noise never went away.

so...not sure what I should do here, but I will sit and wait on it I think. She gets an oil change with synthetic every 5k miles, so whatever happens aint my fault, and she still has TONS of warranty left.

What is red line (or shut down) on the 5.7? Mine is a 2011 there is no usual red indicator line on the tach. Funny thing for an engine with this issue!!! I've also been having an intermittemt starting issue and I've been driving it a lot more because of that. I might as well flog the thing for a while to see if it will fail . . .

Default A word about the internet, rumors and the truth . . .

I have had the good fortune to own a 2001 Z06 Corvette. If any of you followed that car you will remember that it had a major oil ring tension band issue. They were drinking up to 2 quarts of the expensive Mobile 1, that was a warranty requirement, in under 800 miles. When that originally hit the Net in early 01 I immediately questiond my dealership and service manager. They of course said "well you cant believe every thing you read on the internet!". A week later I was driving it home from work and guess what, the oil low indicator scrolled across the dash!! I drove right to the garage and they said they would have to do the test where they filled it up to spec, then I come back in 800 miles to see the level. So we start the test. One month later John Jueriga, then head of powertrain for the bowtie, comes clean on a few shows and internet sites, yes there is an oil ring probelm and chevy will provide upgrade kits to all owners in the proper vin number range. When the vette tech started to do my engine, they fould scuffing in no 5 cyl. They couldn't hone it and meet warranty, so, guess what, my LONG block goodwrench 3rd gen 350 was delivered the next week!! Ran like a top for 8 years after that and they even put the 02 cam and springs in it for me, at my cost. Put it over the normal 405hp. The service manager actually told me that the goodwrench engines were considered better than the ones originally built for the car at bowling green.

SOOOO, to all that tell you to ignore the forums, tell them BS!! This is where you have to come for the truth in the "get it out the door" world of vehicle buying and service we have these days.

Well if this is going to happen i'll probably be the first one, if it is due to mds mode, I specifically drive in mds mode to save gas I always average 18 mpg in new jersey traffic so we'll see.

Yeah, I guess just drive it and let it happen. All we can hope to get from Chrysler before anything breaks is .
