my 5.9 is not good with mileage at all, i have all of the mods that everyone says on here to do besides the electric fan. and mine gets 11 in town, and then 14-15 on the highways. If i was to do it all over again i wouldn't have got the truck do to the fact that i didn't research properly on the mileage. if i was you keep looking for one of the smaller engines.

Mileage is not really a factor to me when it comes to 2nd gen's. I really love the 360 and the 2nd gen Ram's are fairly easy to maintain and fix. Plus they can be had for pennies.

Whats my best option for increasing the fuel economy? Is there a chip or tuner that would boost my MPG that anyone would reccomend?
I noticed a pretty big difference with shorty headers and underdrive pulleys on my old 5.9.

I too noticed a consistent 1/2 mile increase with the shorties. What would you say you noticed with the underdrive pulley?

It's hard to say, but I had shorties, underdrive pulleys, catback exhaust, and intake. I got around 18 mpg which is really good.

I have the sbsc with a bed cover, K&N CAI, shorties, kegger mod, ported heads, 50mm throttle, and turbo muffler dumped behind the cab. I am getting a depressing 12mpg combined driving. But to be fair, I have a WAY heavy lead foot.... that cant be helping!

Man, that's really bad!!! lol! With those mods, you really need a good custom tune. If you don't have one, I bet that's killing you. Also, have you looked into buying the Hughes manifold? I've read about people picking up crazy gas mileage gains with it.

I have in depth, but decided to build the six pack for it instead. I don't travel far for work anymore so mpg is less critical. The tuner would help I am sure, but really just waiting to get the manifold done so I can get the sct tuner programmed for it, rather than have to do it twice; once now, and again when I switch manifolds.

Default Gas

Hello I'm a new member and your forum is very interesting. I've got the 5.9 in my truck. I love my 94 Ram, SLT Laramie,I have been looking at Hho generators and what I've seen is impressive. Do any of you, have experience in hydrogen or lp gas.

I feel one of the biggest problems with the Mopar 5.2/5.9 gas engine is the fact that while the Magnum heads are better as far as port flow goes over the older "LA" style heads, the engines STILL have only 8.5:1 Compression, with IRON heads. Unlike the 5.3 Liter GM "LS" engines with their almost 10.0:1 compression and aluminum heads.

Engines just aren't "Efficient" enough. Too much soggyness on HP and Torque.
