GPMOPAR is on a distinguished road
Default 99 5.2 won't start

Had my truck for 10 years now and love my Ram but lately it's been a pain. I found it had bad sp wires so it was time to replace them. Unfortunately, to replace the cap meant replaceing the distributor since the bolts seized. I put this off for a few years but decided to bite the bullet and do it. Not being in a convenient place like my old 440, I pulled the intake, etc. Long story short, all back together with a used dist. (marked the dist position) it started and ran fine. Test drove with no problems at all! Today, the temperature dropped but not crazy cold, it cranks fine but won't even try to start. This has never done this in the cold before aside from previous issues with the plenum pan, O2 sensor, etc. I can't imagine a sensor suddenly failed and the fuel pump sounds like it's working. I suspect the timing could be a cause but it ran fine a week ago and I can't imagine the timing being off a fraction of a degree would prevent it from even trying to start. I know it's probably spark or fuel but I'm stumped. Coild was replaced a year ago so I ruled this out... any thoughts? It's got me in the mood to build up a 5.9 and retire the 5.2 w/245k...

Welcome to the Z! Nice to have you with us!

Is it throwing any codes? If a sensor did die on you, you should be seeing the check engine light. Check your battery. My old 99 Dak did this to me once, it would crank decent but just wouldn't run to save it's life. I threw it on the battery charger and boom ran like it should.
Try boosting the battery. On all these trucks if the battery falls below a certain voltage the damn things will crank but not run. After that then it's back to the basics, fuel, spark then timing. With the colder weather your cold cranking amps will fall off, could be enough to make the ECU grumpy. Let us know how you make out.

Welcome to the forum,
This forum is full of great looking trucks; packed with great mod ideas and there are loads of knowledgeable and experienced people here.

with Stump3r. Put a battery charger on it to bring right to the top, then try it. If it starts, it's new battery time.

AND - We all like pix! Got any to share?

Enjoy the Z!

Thanks for the quick replies. These forums have saved me lots of money over the years.
The battery is fine as I keep it on a trickle charge like my sleds and boat. No codes unfortunately and there is plenty of fuel pressure in the fuel rail although I need to get a gauge and check it.
I woke up this morning thinking about it and I'm going to check the coil anyway. I remembered that the coil resistance changes with cold temperatures and a weak coil will not supply enough voltage in the cold. I'll let you know what I find since it's cold again today. Might be time for a new Ram!
