Soo..Back again with another issue, it seems. My truck is a Dodge Ram 2005 QC 4x4 with a hemi..has 70,000 miles on it.
I searched thru the threads for driveshaft issues but didn't find the exact same problem as mine.
Three days ago..coming home..I noticed a weird grinding noise..kind of like something was rubbing against a tire. I couldn't figure out what it was. The truck sat overnight..and the next day I went to drive up the road.
The noise became louder..almost sounded like an airplane was taking off the rear end of my truck..was real bad. So I pulled over and tried to move the truck to a safer area..well I heard a giant thump like a 100 lb block of steel fell from under my truck and the back tires started skidding and not moving..whole truck shaking..
I got out and the drive shaft had come off of the rear end and was dragging but still attached to the front end. According to my step dad, the fact that the back wheels locked up could be an awful sign.
Does anyone know if I will need a whole new power train or what could have caused this?
This does not sound good. At the very least, I am guessing your looking at a new rear end and possibly rear drive shaft. What could have caused this? The list is long, but the first item is the lubricant level in the rear end. I am sure that which ever shop you take it too will fill you in on what they find.
Sorry to say, but his will likely be a costly repair.
Yeah..I'm not happy. I'm hoping it's only a u-joint or something similar to that but at this rate, my step father says the whole rear end may need replaced.
That's what I thought too Maddog, you think the transmission and everthing else will be okay? Or just rear end needs to be replaced. I should probably call my mechanic to see what they figured out. They may need to ship it out to a dodge dealership.
I never did update this. The whole pumpkin and rear end needed replaced in my truck because it locked up and basically ate all the bearings. The warranty company, of course, tried to say it was my fault, and I didn't grease the drive shaft and that I was off-roading. I haven't been off-roading in my truck. And the drive shaft clearly doesn't need greased by me. Soo..they ended up paying for a 2,000 dollar repair. One thing after another with my truck.
Holy moly, I guess i should go get my Rear Diff serviced... I put over 900 miles each week.. If this happened on the road, I would be royally screwed..
i only have 41,000 miles on my 2009 Ram & i drive like a grandpa
i just had my u joints replaced on the driveshaft, they were already sloppy & making clunking noises going into reverse
the dealer said that everything was fine now, but, i expect it was a combination of things, maybe the tranny or rear end will be next
time will tell
thats crazy yall have such problems with these new trucks, i drive the Shiznit out of mine, pull down trees, tow more than my max tow weight , take out ford escapes, toyota suv's, fences, trashcans, cactus patches ect.
i have a 2006 dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.7 hemi qc. i have 57,000 miles on the truck and the other day i was driving down the road and my back tires also locked up . i had to put my truck in 4x4 and go in reverse to unlock back tires . i then slowly coasted to a repair garage . garage put my truck on lift and noticed were driveshaft went into rear end there is a nuckle or bearing and were it goes into the rear end there was so much play in there that they said my rear end was toasted. i then had my truck towed to the dealer and they confirmed that the rear end was shot and at this time they are repacing it with a rebuilt rear end. the one i had in mine was a 3.92 lsd . i do not know if dodge is having an issue with rear end on these ram trucks but it seems to be an awfull lot of dodge ram owners having issues with the rear ends on there trucks !
I just had the same thing happen to me this week as Xxbrittox. I have a 2005 Ram Daytona with 85,000 Kilometers, only my warrenty ran out two months ago. I'm hoping there is a secret warrenty that I do not know about. Any advise?
I bought the extended warranty and it covered it..so I got lucky. It was pretty pricey. Around 2k for the whole rear end to be replaced cuz my gears locked up and the pumkin needed repleaced as well as the axels/bearings, etc.
I know the mechanic told me that there wasn't the proper oil in the pumkin..so maybe that was why? Don't know. They put synthetic blend in there so it doesn't dry up/stays lubed properly. Maybe Dodge wasn't putting the right kind of oil which is causing them lock up? Beats me. I have noooo idea.
I may be wrong but I think these trucks come with synthetic diff fluid from the factory. It could have had the wrong weight in it for some reason, just not enough fluid, or didn't have the proper additive if it was a LSD rear end. That royally sucks but glad it didn't cause an accident and your warranty paid for it.
I think I'm going to change mine myself soon. Or maybe have my mechanic do it while I watch. That way I can pull the diff cover and look at things and I know for sure what fluid is in there. If you have it changed at a dealer all they do is suck out your old and fill it with new instead of pulling the cover.
My 06 Dodge 5.7L qc differential just snapped off from the rearend luckily my rearend is okay! I would say that from what I've been reading there's definitely a problem with these trucks and Dodge should be doing the repaires..
