My 1500 is rated for towing 10,200 pounds but is only rated at 1300 pounds payload. I have a travel trailer with a GVWR of 9,000 pounds, which is within the tow rating. The problem is the tongue weight of the trailer empty is 1,115 pounds empty. With just me and my wife in it and the Iron Cross bumper and the winch I am way over the payload rating before I put anything in the trailer. I guess I am going to have to trade up my 2014 1500 for a 2500.

1115lbs dry tongue weight? That's nuts. Loaded that thing will be a couple hundred or more over the receiver rating! Payload- enh... take it or leave it. I use my axles, I know it's not the way the weight gurus like it- but it's all I was ever taught and how we have done it for decades around the farm with no ill effects. FWIW with my 540lbs tongue weight with the family loaded for a week- I am over by about 500lbs or so on the payload sticker. Not ideal if you ask the weight police, but my axles are under and the truck outweighs my little camper.

In your case it sounds as though it works fine. If I were to keep the 1500 I could easily end up more than 1,000 pounds over payload, maybe 1,500. We will be doing a lot of traveling and living in the trailer so we need something with some room. We have located a 2500 with similar options about 750 mile away. It is being transported here, we should have it the middle of the week.

How do you figure the tongue weight? I'm buying a boat Friday. The boat is 6600 lbs and the trailer is about 2500 lbs. Total weight is around 9100 and my truck is rated to 9250 so it will be near the max but from what I've heard the Hemi should have no problem pulling it.

Tongue weight scale:

http://www.sherline.com/lm.htm

My owner's manual specifies a standard and max towing weight. Does anyone have an idea what is meant by that? Different top speeds, or something like that?

-later-

Never mind, I think I have it. Apparently the difference is in the rear axle ratios. The two numbers correlate pretty well with the different trailer weights for the different axles in the towing guide pdf file.

But then again, maybe not!

You would also need to deduct any options the truck has, options it came with and anything you added. There is a sticker in your door jamb that tells you what you payload is equipped the way it came form the factory. The best way to find out how much you can tow according to the manufacturer is to go find a truck scale and weigh your truck with you and your usual load in it and subtract that from the GCWR of the truck.

Boats normally don't have a lot of tongue weight. You can but a cheap scale to weight it or the dealer you are buying from will likely have a scale or can tell you the tongue weight.

This looks like a decent tongue weight scale. I have one on order and should receive it tomorrow.
