Default Towing capacity

I just bought my ram 1500 Sport and I am trying to determine the actual towing capacity. How do I tell the tow capacity on the exact model I have? All I can find is max possible but I can't find the actual.

One way is to go to the Ram website. Here is the link http://www.ramtrucks.com/en/towing_guide/ where you enter your vin# and wala your tow capacity appears.

Hmm that's interesting, I was actually just reading my Owners Manual tonight and I swear it said max towing was 8600 lbs and max payload is 1400 lbs. The RAM website said something different??

The towing guide on the Ram website will give you a basic idea. However, if you want to try to get an even more precise idea (that is, until you get your truck and can look it up on the frame sticker), you can go to rambodybuilder.com. Use Internet Explorer, doesn't seem to be working well for me in Firefox.

You select the right categories and you will get more information you can dream about. There is a more detailed payload/towing chart for a variety of models and configurations, as well as a list of all options and the weight they add. This is where I discovered that my spray-in bedliner weighs 30 lbs and the wheel-to-wheel side steps adds 60 lbs...

Since the Ram doesn't comply with the towing standard J2807, I doubt those numbers are actually accurate. Once they do, if they do, those numbers will go down. I ordered a Ram 1500 and was a bit nervous about them not complying since I tow my 2012 Mustang 5.0 drag car up and down Davis dam (where they perform some of the J2807 towing standard tests) on a regular basis. I hope she can handle this.

This chart doesn't show your 6.4L but I would assume your at the top of the chart with 410HP and a 3.92.
I'm getting a 3.92 with 5.7 and 390 hp Laramie cc 4x4. It's towing capacity is 9800.

True that RAM does not comply to the standard, however, I can't imagine that the numbers would go down dramatically because of that. Otherwise it would be recklessly irresponsible for RAM to even use their current numbers, and that would be the best way for them to get tons of lawsuits. And since a lot of people actually tow slightly overloaded with no significant issues, that's why I assume the numbers from RAM can be trusted enough.

In any case, the towing capacity of Rams isn't really an issue when you get the Hemi with the 3.92 axle. Even the ED is rated a respectable 9,000 pounds. The place where Rams are relatively weaker depending on configuration is on payload, that's what you need to watch for.

Payload is an issue with high trim level 1/2 ton Rams. I think my Laramie is something like 900lbs or something crazy low like that.

What's weird with the Ram towing guide is it lists a Ram 1500 Laramie CC 4x4 6'4" box with 3.21 at 6,350lbs. But it rates the same truck in Laramie Limited trim with 3.21 gears at 7,600.

My boat is in the 6,500-7k lb range, and my 14 Laramie CC 4x4 6'4" bed with 3.21 gears tows it fine. No issues with trans/oil temps even in high heat. Power is more than adequate. Definitely better than my 07 Expedition that was rated for 9k lbs. It towed fine as well, but my Ram is a more enjoyable towing experience, better ride, stability, and more towing power.

For what it's worth, I carried right around 1,000 lbs of stone in my week-old Sport (Hemi, 8-spd, 3.92) today; the rear end squatted a bit, but it was more noticeable from the cab than looking at it from outside. Drove and handled like a champ!

Based on the ram website for my particular VIN, my truck is rated to around 1,600 lbs payload and/or 10,200 lbs towing.
