Default trany rebuild

Hello all, I bought a 2000 quad cab 5.9L 4x4 about a month ago. the guy just had the bands adjusted. about 2 weeks into owning it i noticed a whine with the trany shifting. I looked on here and joined the sight I seen about the wrong fluid used alot so I figure I would change it. the next day I lost all forward drive and drove it in reverse about a mile home and parked it. no codes are showing on the obd2 hand held. I figure if I have to rebuild it I want it for good towing any sugestions on what kind of kit to get for the rebuild? and what would a shift kit do for me good or bad? thanks in advance kevin.

Hey, Kevin. Nice work getting home in reverse, mad skills!
I've seen Chrysler tranny's in that year range go out as early as 75k, but most need a rebuild by 150k. As far as a shift kit, if there is a modified valve kit for towing, that might be something to look towards. But getting a larger volume fluid pan and a dedicated transmission cooler would be the best. Keeping the fluid cool equals longer service life and better performance. I hope this helps.

Keep moving forward even when your stuck in reverse

Are you checking the fluid level hot and in neutral? The condition you describe could be low fluid level. The good book also states a broken or misadjusted linkage/cable could cause this. There's a lotta misunderstanding out there about band adjustment, so I'd have that checked. You don't just tighten them down and go. That'll cause them to rapidly fail. Your condition could also be any one of the following:
1. Burnt rear clutch.
2. Valve body malfunction.
3. Transmission overrunning clutch broken
4. Input shaft seal rings worn/damaged.
5. Front planetary failed/broken.
TransGo, Superior, Fairbanks, even B&M all make shift kits. Typically, they offer three stages. Stage 1 is street/RV/towing. Stage 2 is Street/strip. Stage 3 is full race/manual shift only. You sound like stage 1 is what you're looking for. Look for quality kits. Borg Warner is a step up from factory clutches. Red Eagle and Blue Plate are terms associated with quality frictions and hard parts. There are several vendors out there. I have dealt with these guys:

I list their site as an example of what all is available at a glance. Like I said, there are other sites. Lots of stuff on eBay. As with all things, you get what you pay for. Better parts hold up to hard use better.

I'm afraid I'd have to send the PO a bag of poo over that one.
