Default 6 vs 8 speed transmission

Hello forum members,

I'm planning to mount 37" tires in the next few weeks.
I have a 2013 RAM 1500 4x4 Laramie 5.7 6 speed tarnsmission and 3.92 rear.

How much difference would an 8 speed transmission make to prevent it from getting doggy because of the bigger tires.

Is the 8 speed transmission interchangable without further modification?

thanks,
best regards
Leon

Honestly, if you are thinking of swapping out the 6spd transmission for an 8spd, you would be better off selling your truck and getting one with the 8spd in it already. Personally I think you would be fine with your current setup on 37's thanks to the 3.92 gears you have. It would be similar to a truck on 35's and 3.21 gears.

What he said^^^^

But a 8spd with 3.92 would be your best option...and most expensive. Lol

If you considered it this way, swapping out front and rear ring and pinions on your current Ram with the 65RFE for 4.10's or 4.56's, a price tag of about 5K, give or take some, would set you right with running 37's. So if you were to trade it in for an 8speed with 3.92's, the first three tranny gears would definitely help a lot off the line if running the 37's but past 4th through 8th, you'd be identical to your 6speed. That's where I'd make the comparisons if I came to those crossroads. I wish you all the best in your decision bud. Either way, you'd have to pay for that little bit more of happiness with running 37's.

Keep what you got. I have the same as you and a lot of the 8 speed guys would love the 3.92 combo. Our trucks have the highest tow rating for a 1500 as well. You need to realize a decade ago, these trucks were 3 and 4 speeds. They got along just fine. So will you. You also have to realize that the 8 speed is only relevant from 0 to cruise speed. After that, the TQ is locked and the final drive ratio is the same. In other words, highway driving, there is no difference between a 6 or 8 speed.
