Unhappy DODM80 Drone? Well KindaÖ

Ok, so Iíve been living with my straight piped DODM80 for about 2 weeks now and although it sounds NICE, Iím considering putting my Mufflex 14 back on my truck. Allow me explainÖÖ.Despite all the YouTube videos out there saying that a DODM80 wonít drone at highway speeds, mine does. Not constantly but around 30-40% of the time and that is just enough to make me have second thoughts and that is where I think the videos are a bit misleading. Sure, you get drivebys and startups but really capturing the low frequencies of the drone inside the cab while driving is difficult without some sophisticated audio equipment. Computer speakers and gopros just donít capture it and your ears know it instantly when you hear it. Not to mention that sound is so subjective and everyone hears things differently.

From what Iíve noticed, if Iím driving on a flat section of interstate and giving the truck just enough throttle to keep it around 60MPH or so, it is almost as quiet as stock but as soon as you give it more throttle, the groan starts. It grows to an almost unbearable tone just before the torque converter unlocks or right before a tranny downshift. Even though it does not sound like much, I tend to spend a significant amount of time in that section of the powerband especially since not all roads are flat around my area. I knew it was bad when I was listening to a track on XM that I had never heard before and even turned up, it was difficult to tell if what I was hearing was the truck or beats from the song.

On the other hand, a cold start or accelerating on to an onramp is music to my ears and thatís where Iím conflicted. The DOD14M sounds nice but it wasnít loud enough for me. The DODM80 is loud enough and I get compliments everywhere I go but if I canít somehow figure out how to reduce the drone, Iím going to have to go back to the 14. I know a cutout is an option and maybe glasspacks but Iím not sure on either of those. Maybe Iím asking for the impossible Ė loud but no drone. Iím going to give myself two weeks to decide if I can live with the truck the way it is or if I will quiet her down. If I do, there will be an almost new DODM80 posted up in the classified section.

it's cutouts man...90 percent of my driving is straight level and at a constant speed..I don't need to hear the resonance of my exhaust system during this time, especially if i have passengers (alot of the time). I'd rather hear the rhythmic v8 purring along... then comes the other 10 percent when I'm alone and feel chippy or want to "outloud" someone next to me who thinks they have a loud exhaust because with them open, the compliments I get aren't the "your exhaust sounds nice"...it's the "DDAAAYYYUUUUMMM!!!, where the hell did that come from!!"

I'm going to try the Drone Suppression pipe from Mufflex since the guy there said it will cut down on some of the drone. My Mufflex 14 will be up for sale soon.

RC, would be interested in your used dod14 if you get rid of it. I have the 18 now and think I might want a little more. Tks
