Default 4x4 not working / front end grinding

Hey guys,

So just this past weekend I went to put my truck in 4H and it didnt engage and just started to hear grinding in the front end.

played around with the gear selector hoping it would engage and no luck. It ran fine for the first bit leaving it in 2x4 and it was still grinding in 4L

The next day I drove it after about 100ft or so you could hear it start grinding in the front end like it was trying to engage (even though I left it in 2x4) I got the infloor gear selector so its not the electrical selector.

played with the shifter some more hoping it would unstick or something but nothing.. go about 100 ish feet and grinding... stop then take off again it would be ok for a 100ish ft then start grinding again.

Any help on what the potential issue could be so I can point the mech in the right direction to save me some shop labor would be greatly appreciated.

if you need any other details on what its doing let me know!

When you put it in 4 low, does the rear work as low range? Or does it stay partially engaged 4Hi. Might check the linkage to be sure.

Raise the front and see if the noise is coming from the pumpkin by rotating the front driveshaft.

hey so....

mech was working on it couldnt find anything wrong until he grabbed the front driver side axle and it poped right out by hand....

found the retaining clip shredded so he replaced the clip and put back the axle but its still grinding partially.. but this time cause the splines are worn to ****.

He also said my front end shaft has a lot of play side to side almost like the pinion n yolk are out of phase or worn? which means my yolk and pinion are worn out too?

So he said the lock mechanism or what ever tells the shaft to lock in the dif needs adjustment and odds are the gears that turn the axle need changing

basicaly from the sounds of it.. ill need

at the least 1 driver side axle, the gear that turns the axle inside the dif, and yolk / pinion set up.

Considering I would be rebuilding all of it... i might as well get all new axles for the front end and gears (fully rebuild the Dif not just the few bearings?)

any good aftermarket stuff to do while im in there? and good heavier duty axles that wont run my wallet dry?

i plan on buying the 4.56 kit from 3rd strike performance that includes all new bearings seals ect...
