Default transfercase question

I found a NP241c transfer case. Will the case work in my dodge. And if not will the internals interchange

I am not 100% but I think the difference in the two is slip yoke length. You might want to double check. That said if the ratios are the same the internals should swap over. You may have to keep the 241D output shaft if the length is dissimilar from the 241C.

Everything I can find shows both the C/D were offered in both passenger and drivers drop at some point. Spline count would very, but if he keeps his current output shaft then it shouldnt matter.

For the 1500 specifically there were at least 5 different versions of the NP 241 offered over the years. They all had the 2.72 ratio, and all were drivers side drop. Differences seem to be internal chain size (241 vs. 241HD) and spline count.

That said you are better of replacing like with like. Even assuming the spine count is the same and the ratio is the same you may not be getting a better TC. If you are seriously contemplating switching then consider going to a 241OR and changing your rear driveshaft.

It's a bit comical to talk about putting a 241 type transfer case that into a truck that came with 27x transfer case. This assumes that the OPs profile details are correct: 2003 5.7 Hemi V8. We don't know if its a half ton or not.

True, I was assuming it was a half ton. Many of the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks came with the 241DHD, but that is another ballpark (and pretty crappy IMO).

Show us a 2003 5.7L Hemi V8 4x4 with a 241DHD...please.

So to answer the OPs original question. No, a 241C will not work in your Dodge if the one you have is described in your profile details.

here is a good resource. Looks like 2003 is some intermediate model b/t 2nd and 3rd gen. For instance, why the break 04-05?

There are several. Mostly those equiped with the snow plow prep group. It wasnt supposed to happen as they were all supposed to be switched to 271, but many made it out with the DHD. Very similar issue to the 2007 Jeep sitting two houses down from me. D35 rear axle from the factory, even though they were all supposed to be D44. Turns out the factory didnt get enough up front, so the D44 went into the Rubicon and the D35 leftovers went into the first few thousand non rubicon JKs.

Chrysler has been notorious about these carry over parts in the past.

Thanks for all the info y'all. It is a 241 not a 27x transfer case. I will definitely look into that case upgrade. I have considered a NP205 just to avoid the chain drive.
