My bank had a Repo 2012 Ram 1500 Express with the 5.7 I would rather had that but I couldn't afford the payments on it. The 4.7 has plenty of pep to get around people but my only complaint is at about the 30-40mph range the transmission feels really sluggish as in my torque just "dies off" until it shifts at about 42mph then its fine again. Anybody else have that issue or feeling when driving?
I have an 08 with the same motor and I found that using the Tow/haul feature of the trans while I'm driving around town makes a HUGE difference in how the truck drives. It holds gears longer and keeps the truck in the power band all the time. I went from a 03 hemi to this and once I figured this out I no longer miss my hemi(except when I firewall it from a stop). The ultimate fix is to get a superchips with the transmission tuning package but, until then the Tow/haul really makes a difference.

I just bought a 2010 reg cab 4.7 4X4 and will be hand-calculating my mileage tonight when I fill up. Right now it looks like it's going to average 19. Tomorrow morning is a highway trip to RI, so I'll fill up right off the highway there and see how accurate the HUD is. So far, I really like this engine in spite of having owned three other HEMI Rams.

Can't complain much about my truck, I love it but a hemi would be better. After all the money I have sunk into this engine I'm still not happy.

Kinda a tough crowd here. I have owned a few trucks over the years including Chevys and a couple Fords. One Chevy had a straight 235 cui 6 cyl., all the rest had either the Chevy 350's or the Ford 351W. The 235 was a dog but the rest all had adequate power. None had the performance or anything near the horsepower that my Ram with the 4.7 has. My first Dodge was an 09 Ram 2wd Quad cab. I loved the truck and felt it had plenty of power. I pulled a horse trailer with 1000lb horse, I've hauled a 1/2 ton of hay in the bed and another 1/2 ton in a trailer. The only thing about the truck that was lacking for me was 4wd. Two weeks ago I traded it in for a 2013 4x4 Ram 1500 Quad cab with the 4.7. I am impressed with the engineers and how they can squeeze so much power out of smaller engines. Years ago (1978) my dad had a truck that had 375 lb/ft torque and only 245hp. It took 460cui to get that kind of power and it only got 10mpg empty. I love my 4.7! 310hp 330 lb/ft isn't anything to sneeze at.

That 460 made it's torque at alot lower RPM,you can have lots of torque, but if it doesn't occur till way up in the RPM band,it doesn't do you much good.
Odds are that 460 would spin the back tires pretty good on a 3/4 ton, while your 4.7 1/2 ton not so much.
Peak numbers aren't all that you need to look at when it comes to torque,it's more what kind of numbers the engine develops under the peak torque curve that mean more

And that is a good point. I think it is all about having realistic expectations.

As technology gets better they get more and more power out of small displacement. They also usually raise the powerband so that the power is there when needed but you can cruise at lower rpm(reduced power) and raise mpg.

I find that my 2010 4.7L has way more than enough power than I need. I had a 300cid ford inline six before that was similar. It was slow, but had plenty of toque. The 4.7 is a little faster, has plenty of torque, and gets great mpg. It's not the strongest out there but IMO it's near the top of the list of most fuel efficient truck engines that can actually pull some weight.

To bad the 4.7's been discontinued.
I think the 8sp would of been a great upgrade to the little motor.
Best of both worlds ,lots of torque multiplication in the first couple of gears, with the ability to cruise at a decent rpm.

Another dream would of been to see the 4.7 get a pair of small turbo's.
It would turn the motor into a torque monster for it's cubes, and still have the ability to get decent milege.

I have to admit,for a glorified 283,lol,they pull good.

But i drove 78 460's,they'd spin tires,wouldn't pass a gas station though,lol.
I owned a 76 F-150 with a 460/early 429 timing chain set/and a pair of blackjack headers, the truck would literally sit in one spot spinning the tires when you hammered it from a dead stop.
Greatest grin creating truck i ever owned, lol
Wicked for doing high school parking lot burn-outs.
But it'd wear a set of tires out in a summer, lol

How about a 454 SS 1/2 ton pickup

Things have changed a lot. Size has gone done, mpg has gone up, and the peak power rpm has gone up. Yeah you can't smoke the tires at 1,500 rpm anymore, but you can still do it
