Default Conversion from 1500 to 2500 or just buy a 2500 diesel debate

I'm debating on whether to just go buy 2500 diesel or to just upgrade my drive line tranny and axles from a 2500 with the hemi in it. I do a lot of towing with a travel trailer that weighs in at 6900lbs empty and prolly a few hundred pounds more when loaded down for a trip. I live in western North Carolina and there's a lot of pretty big hills and tranny temp on my outline hits a high of 238 on the biggest hill. My wife and I have been going back and forth on whether I should just get a diesel strictly for towing or just swap stuff out on My truck to make it where I'm not going to fry my tranny and cause other problems. I have the 1 ton tranny cooler on my truck and it still gets that hot. I just don't know which would be the better solution. My truck is my daily driver so it get used a lot for a wide range of things. In the next year or two we will upgrading our camper to larger and heavier one, probably a 35ft or larger toy hauler. Any suggestion?

I would make the jump to diesel if i were you. It will be especially nice if/when you upgrade your camper.
I would imagine the cost to switch all the HD parts in would be pretty costly too, probably as much or more than just buying a new truck.

I agree with Kc, my DD is the 2500 diesel. I only use the 1500 on the farm and local runs to the neighboring farms, 3-5 miles max or fuel it up every 6 weeks. You also live in NC, so you shouldn't have to plug it up at night in the winter.

Just remembered where you live "edit for Marion". You will love tow/haul mode living in the montains (my farm was in Vale, NC in the South Mountains).

We're waiting on photos. R...

Agree with the above. You can spend lots of $$$ on your 1500 to make it into a 2500HD and youw ill never quite get there. Go the diesel route and you will have a better towing experience with what you have to tow and alot of room for growth. Those diesels flatten out big hills and mountains.

Why not buy the 2500 with the hemi motor? That is what I have and I love it. The longer wheelbase and heavy-duty parts will surprise you.

I agree, either upgrade to a 2500 gas or a 2500 diesel.

A friend of mine a few years ago tried to upgrade a F-150 to a old cummins complete with drivetrain and suspension. Crazy, I know. He basically had two trucks and combined them into one frankenstein! I helped him quite a bit with this crazy project. I know its not quite the same as your idea, but from this experience, I have got to say...JUST BUY A TRUCK. It was hardly worth it. Fun, but hardly worth it. Anyways, good luck with whatever you decide.

I appreciate the input guys. I will be buying a truck. Hopefully I can find a dodge 2500 diesel that's in my price range when tax time rolls around.
