Ok guys, I'm new and have been reading your posts, so can we take this one step at a time. I just purchased a 2005 Big Horn 20" wheels and a 4.7L. On my trip back to VA from ST Louis I got an average of 16 mpg. I spent a lot of time physically taking it out of OD. HELP. I don't have a bunch of cash, but need to help my mileage. I've looked at the Fuel MaxxPerformance chip at $25.00 though to the Super Chip Sets and tuners at $300 plus is there a good middle that works well and I don't need to be a rocket scientist to install and work it? I looked at the K&N systems, what do you think of the Specter knock offs? Thanks. BRT

As far as tuners go, you get what you pay for. The cheap tuners for $25 and $69 (SLR motorsports) are just that, cheap. It is a simple flash that reprograms your computer to trick it. They don't really work to well and can harm your engine in the long run. Anyone else correct me if I'm wrong, (which I could be).
As far as the intake, getting an intake set up K&N would be a good way to go. The cheaper filters are cheaper and are probably not as good as quality, but many members have used them and like them, so you can try it if you want.

I was going to suggest the electric cooling fan. It seems like a lot of people overlook that when they are trying to improve mileage/power.

Welcome to the board, both of you.

The fan idea is ok to do so long as you dont plan to do a lot of heavy hauling/towing in the heat. If you aren't sure the engine has fresh plugs, you should check and replace them if worn more than about .005" over the gap spec. Synthetic fluids will help as will proper tire maintainence and alignment. I'm not crazy about knock-off designs where CAI's are concerned. As for the tuners, the other guys and gals on here can give you the best advice on those, but I agree with Bobcat - you get what you pay for.

Thanks... good info. I have already changed out the AF to a K&N with great results. After talking with Starr Motors here in Suffolk, VA (they build off road and race trucks); they recommended changing the filter, but keeping the original air box to keep the intake air cooler. So what do ya'll think of Jet chips? They appear to be less expensive than the super chips.
