Default Flowmaster vs. Magnaflow

Still waiting on my 13 Laramie to arrive at the dealer, but I'm anticipating that the stock exhaust just won't be enough for me. I'm looking for more of a specific sound more so than looking for performance gains. I had a Flowmaster on my old Avalanche, and I freakin loved it. To me it just sounds like a much deeper, roaring sound rather than just LOUD. However, I'm open to different brands. Anybody have a Magnaflow or Flowmaster? If so, what specific model/series, and why did you choose it?

Thanks in advance

Congrats on the new truck! I have a 14" magnaflow on mine now and it sounds pretty good to me. Has a decent rumble while on the throttle. I had a flowmaster 40 dumped on my 5.3 silverado and loved the way it sounded. I drank the kool aid and got the Maggie because of all the people on here running it. If I had to do it over again, I would probably go back with the flowmaster. I do agree with most in that the magnaflow is better for performance by design, but I don't really think its something you can feel daily driving, maybe a few hp's on the dyno. If your coming from a flowmaster, the Maggie won't be loud enough for you in my opinion. Hope that helps!

I have had both. Flowmaster on everything I have owned less 2. I had a Charger SRT with a Magnaflow catback that sounded great but way quiet. And current truck, 2013 Crew sport that got an 18" Magnaflow and I love it. Took the resonators off and installed 5" tips and a better flowing Y pipe also. Deep smooth tone. Not obnoxious. Less drone than previous hemi with Super 40 Flowmaster and not as loud. Depends what you are looking for.

I have had both and even had a cherry bomb. IMO the Flowmaster is louder but I guess I would call it less refined???? I is just raw and loud where the Maggie I have (14") just has a real nice note throughout the spectrum and sounds good. If you are just wanting screaming loud can't beat flowmaster but if you want something that sounds good but may not be obnoxious go Maggie.

Also I have heard several people and the shop I got my Magnaflow on, say that the Flowmaster sounded WAY worse when the MDS kicked in. May ask around about that.

If a particular type of note is what you're after, than only you can decide.

Spend some time using the forum's Search feature, as well as time on YouTube, to compare & listen to the tones of different exhaust systems for our 4th Gen Ram 1500's.

Don't just limit yourself to the two brands you mentioned as someone other may have exactly, or close to, what you're looking for. My signature may also help you out.

Good luck and welcome to the boards.

Flowmaster will definitely be louder and as madhatr02 said, more of a raw sound. I have the 50 Series HD muffler (came with my full cat back system) on my truck and I love it. It's nice and loud when you put your foot into it but quiet enough cruising down the highway to not give you a headache. I have a link to a sound clip in my signature below if you're interested.

I do like the Magnaflows too though. They definitely have a nice smooth sound to them. If you are going to get one I wouldn't go with anything bigger than a 14" though otherwise it will be too quiet IMO.

Thanks for replies everybody. I'm leaning towards flowmaster since I've been very happy with my first one, but I'm definitely gonna continue to shop around. Now if only I had a shiny new truck to install it on...

I have an Aero 3030xl. Start up its loud, cruising is mellow but hit the go pedal and the rumble is awesome.

I had 2 Flowmasters on a 350 cu inch 1956 Chevy 1/2 ton
they were the 2 chamber type

My work foreman had 2 Flowmasters on his 1957 Chevy Bel Air
they were the 3 chamber type

when i idled my Chevy near another parked car, they could feel the vibration in their seat
It was loud, but no so loud that i could be given a noise ticket

the other Chevy car was quiet until he stepped on it

every exhaust is different, even within brands
my Ram exhaust is a bit to quiet, even at 85,000 miles, i have the 18" Magnaflow w/dual rear pipe
it has been on there from the time that i had 750 miles on it
