L&M R/T 392- Stage One

Just thought I'd share my build of dropping a 392 Challenger non MDS crate motor into my 2012 R/T. First off, huge props to Chris at Modern Muscle for the motor, Johan at Diablosport for the tuning and Mike at L&M for the installation and patience!

Now there are many ways to do a motor swap, but I wanted as seamless and stealth a look as possible. I wanted to retain the mechanical fan and I preferred the stock airbox location, instead of just stuffing a tube down by the fuse box due to the revised throttle body location. So long story short, I essentially purchased a 392 long block. Here's the list of parts swapped over from my Ram onto the new engine:
  • Timing Cover (Needed for fan)
  • Thermostat Housing (No water cooling option due to fitment)
  • Water Pump and Mechanical Clutch Fan
  • Wiring Harness
  • Oil Pan (Challenger has a front pickup and pan, won't work on Rams)
  • Oil Pickup
  • Dipstick
  • R/T Torque Converter
  • JBA Shorty Headers (SRT's won't fit)
  • Intake Manifold and Throttle Body (Challenger one will fit, but requires custom air filter)

Here's a list of upgrades we put with the motor swap:
  • 180 Thermostat
  • 87mm Throttle Body
  • 392 Fuel Injectors
  • HD Transmission Cooler with SPAL Fan
  • L&M 545RFE Transmission
  • Deeper Transmission Pan (2 more quarts of fluid)

Here's some pics of the empty engine bay and trans cooling parts.

Here's the motor being assembled....

Please note that some of the pictures will show the thermostat housing with the cooler line outlet and the oil cooler. These were removed due to fitment concerns. They can be used, but with a shorty oil filter only.

Words do not describe the torque curve on this motor. She just flat out hauls ass and feels like this should have been the engine in all of our R/T's from the get go.

As for price, I can share the parts estimates here:

Crate Motor: $7600 (shipped and core)
Trans Cooler and Lines: $300
Trans Pan: $200
Misc: $200 (oil, gaskets, etc...)

Labor for the engine is anywhere from $1K-$2K depending on your shop of choice.

But here's the nice part for me that pushed me in this direction over FI: Your stock engine and all of the 392 parts unused have value, real value. For instance:

2012 5.7L VVT Longblock: $2000
392 Intake Manifold and TB: $400
392 Headers: $300-$500
392 Oil Pan/Pickup: $100
392 Oil Cooler and Hoses: $100

Total: $3000

She heads back to L&M at the end of next week for my Stage 2. At that time, she'll be dyno tuned and adjusted along with a complete coilover suspension, Brembo brake kit front and rear and paddle shifting out of a Jeep GC SRT. I'm telling you, the sky's the limit with Mike at L&M gentlemen so get your bank accounts ready!

That's cheaper than some big mods some have going on.

Looks great. Can't wait to hear some numbers from the track.

Looking forward to stage 2. Hopefully this heat wave gets the hell out of here before we get started.
